Doctors at Peterborough City Hospital are utilising an "AI-powered diagnostic tool" designed to enhance the analysis of biopsies. This innovative tool, developed by Ibex Medical Analytics, aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reporting, ultimately benefiting both pathologists and patients.

Dr. David Bailey, a pathologist at Peterborough City Hospital, expressed his enthusiasm for this exciting breakthrough in diagnostics. He stated, "I have seen some huge advancements in technology during my career, but none more so than the strides being made in digital pathology now." Dr. Bailey emphasised the transformative potential of AI in pathology, highlighting its ability to alleviate the fatigue experienced by human pathologists and significantly improve patient care.

The AI-powered diagnostic tool is the subject of a 12-month trial funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research. Its primary objective is to support pathologists by enhancing the accuracy of reporting and reducing the time required to review and report each biopsy. By leveraging an algorithm developed with input from over 100 pathologists worldwide, the software conducts a series of checks for breast cancer, analysing tissue samples to expedite the detection process.

The robust testing of the AI tool has demonstrated its high accuracy rate, which significantly reduces the need for patients to undergo repeat biopsies. This not only saves time but also provides a more efficient use of resources, allowing pathologists to focus on delivering timely diagnoses and improving patient experience and care.

Breast Cancer UK reports that approximately 56,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women in the UK each year. With the development of this AI-powered diagnostic tool, the hope is to detect breast cancer more quickly and with greater ease, ultimately leading to earlier interventions and improved outcomes for patients.

The AI tool will initially serve as a safety net, providing an additional layer of analysis after a consultant has reviewed biopsy slides for the first three months. Following this period, the AI will pre-read biopsy slides, instantly highlighting areas of concern and expediting the identification of cancer. This accelerated diagnosis process will significantly reduce the timeframe required to reach a diagnosis.

The success of a similar AI tool in prostate cancer cases over the past 18 months has paved the way for its implementation in breast cancer analysis.
