Asus ROG Launches New High-Performance, Cooler, 'Cyberpunk' Gaming Laptops

Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) hosted its Boundless virtual launch event on Tuesday, 17 May, where it announced its latest offerings. Chief of which are new high-performance gaming laptops, namely the ROG Strix SCAR 17 Special Edition and the ROG Flow X16.

The ROG Strix Scar 17 Special Edition comes equipped with a 12th-Gen Intel Core i9-12950HX processor and up to an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti laptop GPU. The Taiwan company touts these key hardware components can output more power than ever before thanks to a custom vapour chamber that's paired with the exclusive Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal thermal interface. This is same thermal interface that Asus earlier this year announced it was working on with Thermal Grizzly, which is said to be up to 15 degrees lower than traditional thermal paste. It's also up to five degrees cooler than the existing liquid metal formulations Asus was previous using.

The change to the new cooling solution reportedly required Asus to change its tooling, given how difficult it was to apply the thermal interface. The performance benefits, however, seem more than worth it, with new laptops now having the ability to be pushed further and reach high refresh rate numbers.

The Scar 17 SE features either FHD 360 Hz or QHD 240 Hz panel options, both with just 3ms response times. It also has up to 64 GB of blazingly-fast DDR5 4800 MHz RAM and PCIe Gen 4 storage in a RAID 0 array. When it comes to its aesthetic, Asus describes it as a distinctly cyberpunk look, with invisible ink applied directly to its metal chassis. This design feature lets the laptop's surface shine with blue and green ink when shined with UV light.

ROG Flow X16

The new ROG Flow X16, meanwhile, is a 16-inch thin and light hybrid gaming laptop. It houses an AMD Ryzen 9

6900HS processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti GPU, with support for the XG Mobile external GPUs. And it only weighs 2.1kg. The convertible machine also includes a QHD 165hz LED panel with 1100 nits peak brightness and

100% DCI-P3 gamut as well as support for the flagship ROG Nebula HDR Display. For cooling, it packs the all-new Frost Force Technology and Pulsar Heatsink, consisting of three fans and a high density heatsink.

Asus has yet to share local pricing and release details for the two laptops. The company at the event also announced new items in its ROG Slash fashion line, along with the expansion of the ROG Citadel XV game, SCAR Runner.
