Apple Expands Retail Channels in China, Opens Store on WeChat
WeChat users in China can now purchase Apple products, including iPhones, iPads and Macs, through the newly opened store on the popular social media platform.

This move by Apple aims to tap into the growing trend of Chinese consumers using social media platforms for shopping.
In a significant expansion of its retail presence in the world's second largest economy, Apple has opened a store on WeChat, China's dominant messaging app. WeChat, known for its diverse services including e-commerce, livestreaming and payment options, announced that users can now conveniently buy Apple products through the store. This move strengthens Apple's reach and availability to Chinese consumers.
Apple's decision to join WeChat's platform follows the rising popularity of social media platforms for shopping among Chinese consumers. Platforms like WeChat and Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok owned by ByteDance, have become go-to destinations for online shopping in China.
Alongside its own stores and website, Apple already operates a shop on Alibaba Group's Tmall online marketplace, further expanding its digital retail footprint. In May, the tech giant also explored new marketing avenues by hosting its first-ever livestream show in China, demonstrating its commitment to engaging with consumers through various channels.
According to Counterpoint Research, China experienced a 5% decline in smartphone sales during the first quarter, marking the lowest figure since 2014. However, Apple defied the trend and achieved a 6% year-on-year increase in sales, securing a 19.9% share of the Chinese smartphone market—the company's largest since 2014. This success highlights Apple's ability to thrive even in a challenging market environment.
