Midjourney Branches Into Medical Tech With Full-Body Ultrasonic Scanner

Midjourney, an artificial intelligence organisation known for its powerful image generation technology, is developing a full-body ultrasonic scanner. This new project marks a significant departure from its established AI expertise. The company describes the initiative as "a little weird and a little crazy, but also spectacular and filled with hope."

The Midjourney Scanner project is currently in an early stage of development. Users will step onto a platform that slowly submerges their body into water, where a ring of underwater sensors will send ultrasonic waves through the body. This process aims to create an image of everything happening inside.

The technology behind the scanner is related to how dolphins use echolocation to explore their surroundings underwater. The entire scanning process is projected to take under 60 seconds, a considerable reduction compared to the 90 minutes typically required for a full-body MRI.

Midjourney's AI expertise will be crucial in processing the terabytes of data generated every second during a scan. The scanner will require significant computational power and AI capabilities to convert these sound waves into detailed images, providing a comprehensive body map faster than an MRI.

In 2025, Midjourney signed a licensing agreement with Butterfly Network, a company specialising in handheld ultrasonic scanners, indicating a collaborative approach. The project's hardware is being led by Ahmad Abbas, who previously worked on Vision Pro at Apple.

Midjourney stated it is advancing the project at the "maximum speed that’s physically possible." The first Midjourney Spa, which will include hot tubs, saunas, and the new scanners, is expected to open in San Francisco in 2027. This facility aims to allow guests to receive a full body scan and a comprehensive health data library while enjoying spa amenities.

Over the next 12 months, Midjourney plans to refine the software and hardware, then build a "research spa" and upgrade to a second-generation scanner. The organisation will also seek FDA approval for the project. In 2028, Midjourney Spas could begin opening in more cities, coinciding with an anticipated upgrade to a third-generation scanner.

The third-generation scanner is expected to feature custom silicon, resulting in significantly improved image quality and faster scan times. By 2031, Midjourney aims to establish a global fleet of over 50,000 scanners, with a total scanning capacity of 1 billion scans monthly. The company plans to publish regular updates on its progress.
