5 Shows For Your Netflix & Chill Sesh This Long National Day Weekend

This weekend is the only 4-day long weekend of 2019 for us Singaporeans to either take a mini vacation or just stay home and relax. In light of that, here are some shows that we’re super excited to watch over those few days.
1. Wu Assassins

So this is an all new series from Netflix that’s slated to air on 8th August, just in time for the long weekend! It’s about a chef working in San Francisco’s Chinatown, who discovers his destiny as an assassin who’s duty-bound to prevent mystical powers from falling into the hands of people looking to use them for evil.
Sounds like the perfect action-packed series with Chinese mythology, martial arts and supernatural elements!

After six seasons, the seventh and final season is finally upon us. This series was one of the few that really had LGBTQ+ representation and brought up issues like racism, police brutality in the States and others up for viewers to think about in a widely watched TV show.
For many younger viewers, we probably grew up with this show that started airing in 2013 on Netflix. I’m not a particularly big fan of shows that try to prolong their lifespan so they can milk as much profit as possible, so I’m glad that the writers have decided to tie up loose ends and end the series instead of dragging it out.
3. Shirkers

Of course, we can’t have an article about what shows to watch over NDP without including one that’s shot in Singapore and inspired by a Singaporean filmmaker’s story. Shirkers is a documentary that tells the tale of Sandi Tan and her two friends who made Singapore’s first indie movie, also entitled Shirkers, with an American mentor named Georges Cardona. Cardona later disappears with the footage, leaving Sandi devastated for 20 years.
Check out this show for some cool footage of Singapore in 1992; some of us might be too young to remember how our home was like back then, so get your parents to sit in and watch with you!
4. Lucifer

I first watched this series in Italy when I was there on vacation in 2018 and fell heads over heels in love with it, staying up late each night thinking “just one more episode” since I knew I wouldn’t be able to continue watching it when I returned to Singapore. But luckily, the show came to Netflix Singapore this year and I could finally introduce it to all my friends.
A handsome lead actor, intriguing storyline and rocky relationships, what’s there not to like? There’s even 4 seasons, so Netflix marathoners will be able to split it up nicely into the 4 days (just remember to eat!). Season 5 has been confirmed to be coming to Netflix Singapore too, so if you’re on the fence, it’s definitely time to start this series.

This is a little more risque, so perhaps you’ll want to make sure you don’t watch this with your parents. Toru Muranishi might not be a well-known name, but he’s the filmmaker who revolutionised the Japanese adult video (AV) industry.
Set in the 1980s, this series is based on Nobuhiro Motohashi’s non-fiction book that chronicles Muranishi’s life and setbacks as he goes from an encyclopedia seller to being known as the “Emperor of Porn” in Japan.

One more tip for you if you’re already downloading episodes of your favourite show to watch on the go: Take advantage of Netflix’s Smart Download feature, where the app will automatically download the next episode after you’re done watching and delete the one you’ve finished. No need to download a gazillion episodes now, or go through your list of downloads to manually remove them!
