Zeekr, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, introduced an improved version of its 009 multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) on July 19, including a new variant that drastically lowers the luxury minivan's starting price. The goal is to attract a growing number of rich Chinese families seeking quality options.

The redesigned 009 highlights Chinese manufacturers' efforts to improve their luxury offerings and shift public image of high-end vehicles both domestically and worldwide. Zeekr, which is linked with Geely, aims to set a new standard for MPVs, surpassing the Toyota Alphard. The redesigned 009 offers improved performance, increased range, and special features customised to Chinese preferences, including as in-car guided meditations.

Jason Lin, a Vice President of Zeekr, underlined the shift in consumer preferences among Chinese middle- to upper-class clients, who are moving away from huge SUVs and towards more manoeuvrable MPVs. Zeekr, together with Xpeng Motors and Li Auto, expects strong growth in the MPV market due to advances in vehicle capacities.

Chinese MPV sales surged by 16% last year, with the segment expected to grow by 20% this year.

The Zeekr 009 faces competition from electric models like Xpeng X9 and Li Auto’s Mega, as well as plug-in hybrids such as the Denza D9, Toyota Alphard, and General Motors’ GL8 Century. With a focus on fulfilling multiple client needs, the revised 009 now provides both six- and seven-seat configurations with numerous motor and battery options, priced between RMB 439,000 and 469,000 (US$60,363 and $64,488).

The new Zeekr 009 variants appeal to a variety of consumer categories, with the six-seat, dual-motor versions offering high acceleration and fast charging ideal for business travellers. Meanwhile, the single-motor, seven-seat models target wealthy Chinese families, especially multi-generational households, at a lower price range.

Zeekr's dedication to giving a pleasant experience includes specific settings such as "Baby Sleeping" for younger passengers and a cool mode for guided meditation. To differentiate its automobiles from competitors, the company also uses high-quality inside materials, innovative components, and customisable options.

The all-new Zeekr 009 will be delivered on Monday, less than two years after the company's second model was released. The company is increasing its market reach by releasing a right-hand drive version in Hong Kong for HK$ 755,000 (US$96,716), and it intends to develop a special Grand Edition to compete with luxury automobiles such as the Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
