ByteDance Launches Doubao 2.1 Pro Amidst Production Growth

ByteDance has officially launched its flagship large language model, Doubao-Seed-2.1 Pro, which now facilitates 180 trillion daily token calls. This figure represents a 1,500-fold increase since the initial launch of the model.
The new model performs competitively against global industry leaders including GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.7, and Gemini 3.1 Pro. ByteDance reached a production-grade inflection point in coding, agent functionality, and vision-language processing.
Its long-context agent supports million-token input windows and offers a 51% improvement in complex task completion rates. The model competes with top-tier international options in benchmark evaluations.
Volcano Engine, the cloud platform belonging to ByteDance, introduced the enterprise AI agent development platform HiAgent 3.0. This platform holds a 17.8% market share in China and includes new modules for policy control and asset registry.
The company also released the video generation model Seedance 2.5, the image creation model Seedream 5.0 Pro, and an audio generation model. These additions complete a full-stack AI product matrix encompassing general-purpose, vertical, and enterprise cloud services.
Doubao maintains its position as the largest AI application in China with 200 million daily active users and 345 million monthly active users. Despite this reach, the service generates less than 1 million RMB in daily revenue, primarily through e-commerce commissions.
Operating costs for daily compute reach tens of millions of yuan, resulting in a significant loss. This highlights the difficulty of monetising consumer AI in a market where user willingness to pay remains low.
ByteDance is shifting its strategy from consumer traffic acquisition toward enterprise monetisation. The organisation plans to leverage the Volcano Engine across more than 30 industries to create sustainable revenue.
