JBL Under Armour True Wireless

As majority of wireless earbuds that exist in market are geared towards everyday commute and leisure, options like the Under Armour True Wireless Flash by JBL, which go beyond day-to-day use and are suitable for exercise are always welcome!

Well-built with water and sweat resistance, coupled with a snug fit for your ears, this pair of earbuds are definitely a great companion for fitness fanatics!

Design and Build Quality

Just from the design and built quality alone, the Under Armour True Wireless Flash by JBL screams athleticism and #fitspo!

Housed within a matte-finished aluminum charge case are a pair of slick matte black earbuds with the shiny Under Armour logo on each side. The logos are actually buttons, with the left controlling Ambient Aware and TalkThru hearing modes (a little more on that later), while the right controls music playback, voice assistant and calls.

What I really liked about the earbuds are that they are certified IPX7 sweat and waterproof, giving me the confidence to take it out for the most rigorous workouts without fearing any form of malfunction.

One thing I must definitely highlight – the charging case. It’s definitely hefty and way bigger than the ever-popular Apple AirPods and its nearest competitor, the Jabra Elite Active 65t. If you are planning to put it in your pockets, be prepared for a very noticeable budge. On the hindsight, the sheer size equates to a lot of battery life (1,500mAh) – to 25 hours, more than enough for a week’s worth of daily workouts!

The charging case itself is also water-resistant and only takes two hours to fully charge. In the two weeks I had with it, I only needed to charge it once, taking into account 14 hours of commute time and 3 hours of work-out time. SOLID!

Performance and Sound Quality

Unboxing it and pairing it to my smartphone was a relatively smooth process (as with most of the existing earbuds available today).

The Under Armour True Wireless Flash by JBL do pack in a lot of features for such a small package. Each earbud features a 5.8mm audio driver tuned by JBL, producing super bass-heavy sound – perfect for long runs and cardio sessions in the gym! On the flipside, the emphasis on bass reproduction might make it challenging for casual use.

I took it out for a 10km run and despite the hot and humid weather here in Singapore that made me sweat buckets, the Sport Flex wing and ear tips kept the earbuds snug in both my ears. Loved it!

I also put the Ambient Aware feature, which allows one to hear external noise, to the test during my runs. Not bad a feature, especially if you are working outdoors or going for runs that will involve you going near traffic. Competitor brands have this feature as well (though named differently) and to be honest, they are all pretty similar and great for everyday workouts! The TalkTru technology, which amplifies speech in addition to lowering music so that you can easily chat with someone next to you, was not really for me. My fiancé’s voice sounded a little distant, resulting in me intuitively removing one of the earbuds to speak to her instead when we were working out.

What It Can Be Improved On

One thing that really irked me about the Under Armour True Wireless Flash by JBL was the lack of volume controls on the earbuds. Maybe I’m too use to the Jabra Elite Active 65t, which allows me to control the volume without needing to take out the phone (or control it using a smartphone should you own one).

Another downside was the lack of multi-device connectivity. As the earbuds operate on Bluetooth 4.2 instead of the latest 5.0, I am unable to pair it to both my phone and tablet and seamlessly switch from one device to another when consuming music or general content. Pity.

Let’s hope these features above will be included in the next version of the Under Armour True Wireless Flash by JBL.

Overall Verdict

3.5 out of 5 Stars OR 7.5/10 For S$249, this is certainly not a cheap pair of earbuds. Lack of multipoint connectivity and volume control aside, should you be part of the #fitspofam, the build quality, ergonomic design, good sound with solid bass, and long battery life will justify the purchase!
