U.S. President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for China-based ByteDance to divest TikTok’s U.S. assets to Sept. 17, giving the short-video app more time to avoid a shutdown.

Trump signed an executive order on Thursday granting a 90-day extension, following earlier delays in April and June.

The extension comes despite a 2024 law requiring TikTok to cease operations in the U.S. by Jan. 19 unless ByteDance completed a sale or showed significant progress toward one.

Trump, who began his second term on Jan. 20, has opted not to enforce the law. He has said he wants to keep TikTok active in the U.S., citing its popularity among young voters during the 2024 election.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said the administration would use the next three months to finalise a deal that protects U.S. consumer data.

“It’s more time; more time to make a good deal,” Leavitt told reporters. She added that White House lawyers and the Department of Justice believe the extension is legally sound.

TikTok said in a statement it is continuing to work with U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s office and expressed gratitude for Trump’s support.

Trump has also expressed optimism that Chinese President Xi Jinping would approve a deal to preserve TikTok’s U.S. operations.

A proposed deal earlier this year would have spun off TikTok’s U.S. business into a new, U.S.-based firm majority-owned by American investors.

However, the plan stalled after China signalled disapproval following Trump’s announcement of steep tariffs on Chinese goods.

In March, Trump said he would consider reducing tariffs on China to facilitate a deal with ByteDance.

Some Democratic lawmakers argue Trump lacks the legal authority to extend the deadline and question whether the proposed deal meets legal standards.
