Googlebook Pre-Orders Open at US$899 With Gemini AI Built In

Google has opened pre-orders for Googlebook, a new premium laptop category aimed at Android users and built around its Gemini AI tools. Prices start at US$899, with initial models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo using Intel or Qualcomm processors and offering up to 14 hours of battery life. The launch moves Google's Chromebook formula into a more powerful segment, combining AI features with tighter links between Android phones and computers.

Googlebook is positioned above the traditional Chromebook market, which has long focused on affordability and straightforward computing for students and budget-conscious buyers. Google is instead presenting the new category as a premium showcase for stronger hardware, embedded AI and closer integration with the Android devices people already use.

The first machines will come from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Depending on the model, buyers will get an Intel or Qualcomm processor, while claimed battery life reaches up to 14 hours. The common starting price of US$899 puts the range firmly into mainstream premium-laptop territory.

Gemini is the centre of the experience. Its tools can help draft and organise text, answer questions about content currently displayed on the screen and continue tasks that began on a connected Android phone. That makes cross-device continuity a core selling point rather than an optional companion feature.

Underneath, Googlebook combines technologies from Android with desktop foundations from ChromeOS. Google says the approach is intended to make moving between a phone and computer feel more seamless while preserving the desktop environment expected from a laptop.

The launch also gives Google a new flagship laptop platform as Apple pushes further downmarket with its US$699 MacBook Neo. For buyers, the choice will come down to whether Gemini and Android integration provide enough practical value to justify Googlebook's higher starting price.

With pre-orders now open, attention will turn to how the first partner models differ in design and performance, and whether Google's AI-first approach can broaden the appeal of its laptop ecosystem.
