President Donald Trump has warned against artificial intelligence (AI) overregulation, stating the United States needs one federal standard. Trump asserted that multiple state-level regulations risk undermining growth in the technology sector and hindering America's lead in the AI race.

"Overregulation by the States is threatening to undermine this Growth Engine," Trump posted on social media. He added, "We MUST have one Federal Standard instead of a patchwork of 50 State Regulatory Regimes."
Trump cautioned that without a single federal AI standard, China could "easily catch us in the AI race." Winning the AI race against China has been a priority for Trump.
Following his second term's start in Jan., Trump instructed his administration to develop an AI Action Plan. This plan aims to position "America the world capital in artificial intelligence" and minimise regulatory obstacles to its swift expansion.

The rise of AI has generated several concerns, including fears it could disrupt the democratic process, turbocharge fraud, and lead to job losses.
Trump urged lawmakers to include the federal standard in a standalone bill or integrate it into the National Defense Authorization Act, known as the NDAA. "Put it in the NDAA, or pass a separate Bill, and nobody will ever be able to compete with America," Trump stated.
Trump's social media post did not provide details on the federal standard that he proposed.
President Donald Trump called for a single federal standard for AI regulation.
Trump warned that state-level overregulation could impede growth and allow China to gain an advantage in AI.
He previously ordered an AI Action Plan to make America a global AI leader and reduce regulatory barriers.
