Sony 50mm f1.2 GM Review: Is this the best 50mm AF lens now?
Updated: Aug 21, 2021
If there is one word to describe the new Sony 50mm f1.2 GM lens, it’s “fantastic”. This lens delivers in ways that many photographers have been wanting from Sony prime lenses for shorter focal lengths since the 135mm f1.8 GM lens.
First off, the size: it’s compact, considering it’s an f1.2 aperture lens and relatively lightweight as well. Build quality is what you would expect from a GM lens, and it doesn’t disappoint.
Secondly, the internals. Sony has loaded this lens up with whatever they could muster to give the user the sharpest, one of the most corrected f1.2 lenses on the market. Minimal flare, minimal CA, and all that at f1.2.
Focusing speed is also lightning fast. Paired with the A1 in this review, this pair is a match made in heaven. It’s fast, precise and the optical quality really does shine through.
As far as video is concerned, if you are manual focusing, you will notice a bit of breathing. This lens is designed, in my opinion, to be used with AF, and most cinematographers that want to opt for manual focusing lenses won’t be using this anyway. So, for the prosumers or YouTubers out there looking to use this lens for video, there won’t be any issues.
There really isn’t any negative points to talk about on this lens. It was designed to flex a bit and to show that Sony can compete in the f1.2 arena and they succeeded.
