The pilot project, set to kick off in Dallas, Texas, marks Serve's debut in this market segment. The collaboration will involve Serve's robots collecting food from restaurants and transferring it to Wing drones for aerial delivery.

Up until now, Serve Robotics has primarily operated in Los Angeles, catering to the delivery needs of convenience retailer 7-Eleven, Shake Shack, and Uber Eats. CEO Ali Kashani highlighted that this multi-modal delivery approach will significantly enhance Serve's capabilities, enabling autonomous citywide deliveries within just 30 minutes.

While drones were once envisioned as the future of delivery services, their practical implementation has been hindered by limited takeoff and landing spaces in urban areas. In contrast, sidewalk delivery robots are specifically designed to navigate through city environments, offering a more feasible solution for last-mile deliveries.

Adam Woodworth, CEO of Wing Aviation, expressed optimism about the partnership, stating, "Through this pilot partnership, Wing hopes to reach more merchants in highly congested areas while supporting Serve as it works to expand its delivery radius." Serve Robotics, which emerged as a separate entity from Postmates in 2021 following its acquisition by Uber, assured that merchants would not need to make any adjustments to accommodate the robot-to-drone delivery process.

Woodworth also shared that the Alphabet unit, initially a project under Google X incubator, has successfully completed over 400,000 commercial deliveries spanning three continents.
