PS5 Crosses 40 Million in Sales Amid Speculation of New Models in Development
Updated: Dec 18, 2023
Sony crosses another PS5 milestone.
The electronics maker announced on Friday, 28 July that it has sold more than 40 million PS5 units since it launched in November 2020. The figure suggests Sony sold over eight million more units between January to July 2023 after sales reached a total of 32 million by the end of 2022.
The PS5 was marred by supply challenges early into its run, having launched during the pandemic and the semiconductor shortage crisis.
"We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic and it took months for supply chains to normalise so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand," said Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan. "For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues."
Now, however, PS5 units are well-stocked and meeting demand, according to Sony. The gaming giant saw blockbuster sales during the holiday season of last year, when it sold more than seven million PS5 units in a single quarter.
Even with these favourable sales figures though, the PS5 has a ways to go before it can top Sony's other top-selling console releases. In comparison, Sony has sold over 117 million PS4 units as of early 2022 and sold close to 157 million PS2 units as of 2013.
The PS5 milestone comes amid speculation that Sony could soon be releasing redesigned models of the gaming console in the near future.
One report suggests a new PS5 model with a detachable disk drive could come out later in the year. There are currently two models of the PS5 in the market today, one with a built-in disk drive and one without. Apart from the detachable disk drive, the new model in question reportedly wouldn't look any different from the standard model.
The same report also claims that a beefier version of the PS5 is in development, though not much else is known about it yet. If Sony were to pattern PS5 releases to the PS4, the new model – the so-called PS5 Pro – could be a mid-cycle refresh that features more capable hardware, delivering a slight performance bump in games.
