OpenAI has confirmed it has no plans to use Google’s in-house artificial intelligence chips to power its products, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise.

A spokesperson for OpenAI said on Sunday that while the company is conducting early testing with Google’s tensor processing units (TPUs), there are no active plans to deploy them at scale.

The clarification comes two days after reports indicated OpenAI might turn to Google’s AI chips to meet rising demand.

Google declined to comment on the matter.

Although AI labs often test various chips, deploying new hardware at scale requires significant changes in architecture and software support.

OpenAI currently relies on Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) and AMD’s AI chips to support its operations.

The company is also developing its own chip, which is expected to reach the “tape-out” milestone this year, marking the finalisation of its design before manufacturing.

Earlier this month, OpenAI signed up for Google Cloud services to expand its computing capacity, a move that surprised many given the companies’ competitive relationship.

Despite the cloud partnership, most of OpenAI’s computing power will continue to come from GPU servers operated by CoreWeave, a neocloud provider.

Google has recently expanded access to its TPUs, which were previously reserved for internal use.

This strategy has helped Google attract clients such as Apple, as well as AI startups like Anthropic and Safe Superintelligence, both founded by former OpenAI leaders.
