Nvidia is working on Project G-Assist, an AI assistant for gamers that appears as an overlay during gameplay. The AI is "context aware" and can provide pertinent recommendations based on the player's progress through the game. Nvidia intends to work with game developers and communities to incorporate these AI aides.

This AI helper will show as an overlay during gameplay, allowing players to ask questions regarding the game they are now playing. What distinguishes Project G-Assist is its "context awareness" function, which allows it to analyse the player's progress in the game and make appropriate advice.

Nvidia recently demonstrated Project G-Assist utilising the popular game ARK: Survival Ascended. During the demo, a player questioned, "What's the best early-game weapon and where do I find the crafting materials for it?" The AI helper answered immediately, offering a spear as the finest early-game weapon. It also took into account the resources the player had gathered and suggested which crafting recipes to unlock next.

With the introduction of Project G-Assist, one might wonder if this spells the end for content creators who publish game guides and wikis. Jesse Clayton, Nvidia's director of product marketing for Windows AI, believes that in the future, game developers and even gaming communities would use AI helpers. Nvidia intends to work with wiki sites, press sites, and other platforms that offer instructions and walkthroughs to guarantee that the AI helpers coincide with the game's developers' goals.

Clayton further promised gamers that the AI assistance would not encourage cheating. Nvidia intends to collaborate closely with game developers to guarantee that the AI assistants remain within the parameters established by the developers.

While Project G-Assist is not the first AI assistant to offer gaming advise, it does provide a distinct edge. Unlike other options, such as ChatGPT, which force players to leave the game to seek assistance, Project G-Assist displays as an overlay within the game. This implies that players can get AI guidance without halting the action or switching between windows.

Project G-Assist extends beyond gameplay tips and tricks. It also helps PC players optimise their computer hardware. The AI understands the player's system and can provide information on performance indicators such as frames per second (fps) and PC latency. It can even recommend the best graphics settings for the player's individual configuration or uncover ways to use less power while maintaining a 60fps target.

At this point, Project G-Assist is still a technical demonstration, and Nvidia has not specified when it will be available to the public or how much it will cost. However, it is one of several intriguing announcements made by Nvidia at this week's Computex technology exhibition in Taipei. These include software advancements that enable game creators to construct AI-driven characters, as well as a new attempt to standardise graphics cards for compact form-factor PCs.
