Nvidia is developing a new artificial intelligence chip tailored for China that complies with US export regulations and supports high-performance computing clusters, according to a report by The Information.

The semiconductor company plans to produce more than 1 million units of the new B30 chip in 2025 as it seeks to maintain its market share in China, the world’s second-largest economy.

The B30 chip is expected to be introduced in July and will likely be based on Nvidia’s Blackwell platform, which was unveiled last year, according to a research note by Jefferies.

Nvidia founder, President and Chief Executive Jensen Huang said during the company’s recent earnings call that a new AI chip for China was under consideration, though no details were provided at the time.

The move comes after the US government imposed new export controls on Nvidia’s H20 chips in April, requiring a licence for their sale to China. The restrictions are set to remain in place indefinitely.

As a result, Nvidia expects to lose USD 8 billion in revenue in the second quarter and has already taken a USD 4.5 billion charge in the first quarter due to excess inventory and purchase obligations related to the H20 chips.

To comply with the restrictions, Nvidia has been designing chips that operate just within the limits of US regulations, allowing them to be legally sold in China.

China accounted for 14% of Nvidia’s revenue in 2024. Huang has warned that further restrictions could benefit Chinese competitors such as Huawei Technologies.

Huawei has developed AI chips with capabilities that are rapidly approaching those of Nvidia’s. The company is promoting its Ascend processor-based Supernode 384 architecture as a rival to Nvidia’s NVL72 system.

Last month, the Trump administration issued new guidelines stating that the use of Huawei’s Ascend AI processors anywhere in the world would violate US export controls, underscoring the growing competitiveness of Chinese AI technology.
