In an exciting development for home cinema enthusiasts and sports fans alike, streaming platform Max is set to make history this weekend by offering live sports streams in Dolby Vision, the premium high dynamic range format. This announcement, tucked away in a Warner Bros Discovery press release, marks a significant milestone for Dolby Vision, as it will be the first time the technology is used for live sports feeds.

Max's B/R Sports Add-On will enable subscribers with Dolby Vision-capable TVs to stream live sports events in stunning Dolby Vision quality. The press release suggests that this new feature will be available for a wide range of sports, including NBA, NHL, MLB, NCAA, and US soccer games. This move demonstrates Max's commitment to delivering Dolby Vision live streams on a regular basis, rather than just for special occasions.

The introduction of live Dolby Vision sports streaming is significant for two reasons. Firstly, Dolby Vision's intelligent real-time handling of HDR feeds ensures that details are not lost in dark or bright areas of the picture. This technology provides a more immersive and visually stunning experience for viewers. Secondly, Dolby Vision's cross-hardware approach allows HDR feeds to adapt to the specific capabilities of Dolby Vision-capable devices, resulting in optimal color, contrast, and brightness for each display.

While the true impact of live Dolby Vision sports streaming remains to be seen, previous applications of HDR technology have shown that intelligently connecting HDR sources with HDR displays can greatly enhance performance. This advancement not only improves the viewing experience but also makes it easier for consumers to enjoy the full benefits of HDR on their TVs. It is worth noting that Max's Dolby Vision feature will not be paired with 4K resolution streams.

The first sporting event to receive the Dolby Vision treatment will be the NBA All-Star coverage this weekend. Viewers can look forward to the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, February 18 at 8pm ET, the NBA All-Star Game ALTCAST, and a special two-hour NBA All-Star Tip-Off show at 6pm.

Max's addition of Dolby Vision to its sports coverage completes the streaming platform's Dolby story, as it has already been utilising live Dolby Atmos sound mixes to enhance the immersive experience of being in a stadium.

While UK residents may not have access to this weekend's live Dolby Vision experience, those who are able to witness it are encouraged to share their thoughts on the X/Twitter account below.
