According to Reuters, Elon Musk unveiled a collaborative venture between Tesla and his artificial intelligence startup xAI. The project, named "Macrohard" or "Digital Optimus," is described as a system capable of emulating the functions typically performed by software organisations. This announcement signals a new direction for the two companies, focusing on agentic AI capabilities.

Mr Musk elaborated on the system's architecture in a post on his social media platform X. He stated that the project integrates xAI's Grok large language model, which operates as a high-level navigator, with a dedicated AI agent developed by Tesla. This Tesla agent processes real-time video feeds from computer screens and interprets keyboard and mouse inputs directly.
But the introduction of such agentic AI systems has already caused disquiet among investors in the software sector. Anthropic's Claude Cowork, an AI programme capable of performing a range of computer-based tasks autonomously, recently launched and subsequently unnerved those who foresee disruption to established business models by this technology. The market has reacted to these developments.
Mr Musk's xAI organisation was previously engaged in building Macrohard as an AI project specifically designed to enable developers to simulate software creations from companies such as Microsoft. The programme's name itself carries a direct reference to a major player in the software industry, highlighting its intended scope.
Mr Musk further clarified that the system's designation, "Macrohard," is a deliberate and humorous nod to Microsoft. And he affirmed its theoretical ability to replicate the operational output of entire companies. This ambition positions the project as a significant development within the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
The Macrohard system will reportedly operate using Tesla's in-house AI4 chip, coupled with xAI's Nvidia-based server hardware. Mr Musk characterised this combination of computing components as a cost-competitive solution for its sophisticated functionalities, suggesting efficiency in its design and implementation.
Tesla had previously entered into an agreement to invest approximately USD 2 billion to acquire shares in xAI. This financial commitment reflects Tesla's strategic interest in the AI startup's ventures and its role in fostering advanced technological development across Mr Musk's various enterprises.
So, this collaboration follows an earlier acquisition of xAI by SpaceX, which occurred prior to Tesla's investment. That all-stock transaction valued SpaceX at USD 1 trillion and xAI at USD 250 billion. Mr Musk cited the potential for orbital data centres as a primary driver behind that merger, anticipating a potential blockbuster initial public offering for SpaceX.
Records held by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office indicate that xAI filed a trademark application for "Macrohard" several months ago. This formal step underscores the company's intention to secure intellectual property rights for the project and its branding.
