Google has introduced a significant redesign of its Maps application, integrating additional artificial intelligence features aimed at assisting users with navigation and destination planning. The overhaul, driven by the company's Gemini technology, adds two new AI powered functions to the digital mapping service currently used by over 2 billion individuals globally.

One of the new tools, named Ask Maps, expands upon the conversational capabilities previously introduced to the service. This feature offers suggestions to users seeking information such as nearby device charging stations, coffee shops with minimal queues, or a detailed road trip itinerary involving multiple stops and excursions.

Gemini's recommendations draw upon an extensive database. This database includes information on more than 300 million locations and reviews provided by over 500 million contributors, gathered since the inception of Google Maps. And the organisation's executives did not clarify whether there are plans to sell advertisements to businesses seeking prominence in Ask Maps' recommendations. Initially, Ask Maps will be accessible on Google Maps' mobile application for iPhones and Android software in the United States and India, with subsequent expansion to personal computers and other nations.

Another tool, termed Immersive Navigation, represents what Google executives describe as the most substantial change to the maps' driving directions. Gemini created this feature to present a three dimensional perspective, designed to offer users a clearer understanding of their precise location at any given moment. The 3D renderings generated by Gemini incorporate notable buildings, road medians, and other environmental characteristics visible to drivers, facilitating quicker orientation.

Google stated its AI safeguards are now robust enough to prevent the Gemini technology underpinning Immersive Navigation from generating false locations. This issue is known within the technology sector as a "hallucination." So, the company anticipates the new system will reliably guide users.

Immersive Navigation is also intended to help Google Maps articulate the advantages and disadvantages of different driving routes to a single destination. Additionally, it will indicate optimal parking locations upon a user's arrival at their designated destination. This new AI powered navigation will first be available in the United States, on the Google Maps mobile application for iPhone and Android, as well as in cars equipped with CarPlay and Android Auto options.

The increased reliance on AI within Google Maps follows the company's earlier introduction of more Gemini technology into other popular products. Gmail and the Chrome web browser both received updates to make them more proactive for their billions of users. But this expansion also shows Google's confidence in its Gemini 3 model, released previously as part of an ongoing contest for AI leadership with newer organisations such as OpenAI and Anthropic. These Big Tech firms continually refine their AI offerings.

  • Google Maps received a significant update incorporating two new AI features.

  • Ask Maps provides suggestions for points of interest based on user queries and a large database.

  • Immersive Navigation offers 3D visual guidance, including landmarks, to aid drivers.

  • The AI powered features will roll out in phases, starting in select regions and platforms.

  • This move by Google shows increased deployment of its Gemini AI technology across key products.
