Huawei Set to Launch New AI Chip to Rival Nvidia in China

Huawei is preparing to release the Ascend 910C AI chip to rival Nvidia in China. U.S. sanctions have restricted Nvidia from supplying advanced chips to Chinese customers. Initial reports suggest that Huawei's 910C chip could generate orders exceeding 70,000 units worth around US$2 billion.

The upcoming processor, named Ascend 910C, is currently undergoing testing by Chinese internet and telecom firms. Sources suggest that Huawei has positioned the chip as a direct competitor to Nvidia's H100 model.

According to the report, U.S. authorities imposed restrictions last year preventing Nvidia from supplying its advanced chips, including the H100, to Chinese clients due to national security reasons. In response, Nvidia developed three chips specifically tailored for the Chinese market, with the H20 series being the most prominent. However, the computing capabilities of the H20 chips were notably limited compared to the H100 series, in compliance with U.S. sanctions.

Huawei is reportedly gearing up to commence shipments of its latest chip by October. Major companies like ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, Baidu, and China Mobile, are expressing interest in acquiring the 910C chips. Initial discussions between Huawei and potential buyers indicate a projected demand exceeding 70,000 chips, with an estimated total worth of approximately $2 billion.
