Rockstar Games has pushed back the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, extending the wait for fans of the blockbuster video game series.

The announcement was made Friday in a post on X, where the company apologised for the delay but did not provide a reason for moving the launch from its previously expected release in late 2025.
“With every game we have released, the goal has been to try and exceed your expectations and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception,” Rockstar said. “We hope you understand we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Shares of Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, dropped nearly 7% following the news.
Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed support for Rockstar’s decision, stating the company remains committed to delivering a “groundbreaking, blockbuster entertainment experience.”
“While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence,” Zelnick said.
He added that the company expects a multi-year period of growth and increased shareholder value as it continues to release new titles.
Fans reacted with a mix of disappointment and resignation. On a Reddit forum dedicated to the game, some users said they were not surprised by the delay, while others were hopeful that the confirmed date meant the game would finally launch.
The game last made headlines in 2023 when a trailer was leaked online. Rockstar responded by releasing the official trailer 15 hours earlier than planned.
The 90-second preview hinted that the game would be set in a Miami-inspired Vice City and feature a female protagonist named Lucia, a first for the franchise.
It remains unclear whether these elements will be included in the final version of the game following the delay.
