China’s Ministry of Science and Technology has released new ethical guidelines for autonomous driving technology, focusing on user safety and data transparency.

The guidelines, issued Wednesday, require developers to prioritise user safety and prohibit the dissemination of false information when publishing research results.
Developers must ensure that algorithms and models used in autonomous driving are recorded and accessible. Data collection must be limited strictly to what is necessary for achieving driving functions.

The guidelines also clarify liability in the event of an incident involving autonomous systems. Responsibility will depend on the level of advancement of the driving system and whether a human driver or the system was in control.
