Chinese electric vehicle maker BYD surpassed Tesla in battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe for the first time in April, according to market research firm JATO Dynamics.

BYD registered 7,231 BEVs across Europe last month, edging out Tesla’s 7,165 units. The milestone places BYD in 10th position among the most-registered BEV brands on the continent, with Hyundai taking ninth place.
The shift marks a significant moment in the European EV market, where Tesla has long held a dominant position. BYD only began expanding its operations beyond Norway and the Netherlands in late 2022.
Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics, said the narrow sales gap carries major implications. He described the development as a “watershed moment” for Europe’s car market.
Despite facing higher tariffs from the European Union, BYD’s rapid growth in the region has been notable. The company’s rise comes amid Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s increasing involvement in U.S. politics.
JATO also reported that Chinese automakers, led by BYD, are exporting more plug-in hybrid vehicles to Europe. These vehicles have not yet been affected by EU tariffs.
