The collaboration between the two tech giants aims to enhance AI capabilities for Chinese users, but issues have arisen that may impact Apple's phone sales in the region.
Challenges include the adaptation of Baidu's large language models for iPhone users, particularly in areas such as understanding prompts and accuracy in responding to common scenarios. Both Apple and Baidu have not yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters on the matter.
In the third quarter, iPhone sales in China experienced a slight decline of 0.3%, while competitor Huawei saw a significant 42% increase in sales, according to research firm IDC. This trend reflects the growing competition in the world's largest smartphone market.
The launch of Apple's highly anticipated iPhone 16 in September faced criticism in China for its perceived lack of artificial intelligence features. Additionally, Apple's strict privacy policies prohibit the collection of data from users making AI-related queries, a practice that Baidu aims to implement for data analysis purposes.
Baidu's advanced model, Ernie 4.0, serves as the basis for Apple's genAI services on various devices including the iPhone, Mac, and iPad, as reported by The Information, citing sources familiar with the situation. Furthermore, Siri is expected to leverage Baidu's AI models for enhanced functionality.
