Updated: Aug 2
OBS Cloud 3.0 uses cloud technology to transform Olympic broadcasting. The platform includes advanced features such as multi-camera replay systems and UHD live streaming. Sustainability is a major focus, with initiatives to reduce carbon footprints and improve remote working possibilities.
This revolutionary cloud-based platform seeks to transform Olympic broadcasting technology, improving the viewing experience for audiences worldwide.
OBS Cloud 3.0 introduces significant upgrades to Olympic broadcasting systems. OBS Live Cloud is a crucial element that will serve as the primary remote distribution method for Media Rights Holders (MRHs), replacing traditional satellite broadcasting that has been employed since the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. This new system will manage 379 video and 100 audio streams for 54 broadcasters, representing a substantial portion of remote services.
Moreover, the content delivery system has been upgraded with Content+, OBS's distribution platform powered by Alibaba Cloud. It will oversee 11,000 hours of Olympic programming, a 15% increase from the previous Tokyo 2020 Games. This addition is intended to provide more thorough coverage, including exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
Using AI technology, OBS Cloud 3.0 includes Multi-Camera Replay Systems, which allow for slow-motion replays from 14 sites across 21 sports disciplines. Additionally, the Olympic Video Player service will now feature UHD live streaming for a more immersive viewing experience.
The new cloud-based strategy of OBS Cloud 3.0 promises to eliminate reliance on satellite transmission and specific circuits, resulting in more cost efficiency than prior versions. This shift to cloud technology provides greater scalability and flexibility, allowing broadcasters to respond quickly to changing requirements.
Yiannis Exarchos, CEO of OBS, praised the technological advancements by saying, "With approximately half of the world's population watching the Games, technologies like Alibaba Cloud help us tell the stories of the best athletes in the world, but also bring the world together in ways which are more exciting and inspirational."
Selina Yuan, President of International Business at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, highlighted the partnership's commitment to enhancing the viewer experience at the Olympics through practical technology applications.
Furthermore, the new system places a strong emphasis on sustainability by enhancing remote working capabilities to potentially reduce on-site personnel requirements. This is consistent with broader initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of major events such as the Olympics.
Choong Hon Keat, Alibaba Cloud's Deputy Country Manager in Singapore, underlined the Energy Expert solution, outlining how it will monitor and analyse electricity consumption across all 35 Olympic competition locations. This data-driven sustainability solution provides insights into power demand optimisation, which will help with future sustainability initiatives for large-scale events.
In a breakthrough step, AI technology was used to colourise and restore historical film from the 1924 Olympics, emphasising the progression of women's involvement in the games. This Olympics marks a watershed moment for gender equality among athletes, demonstrating progress in encouraging inclusivity and diversity in sports.
