AI Could Impact Up to 5% of Jobs in Latin America
Between 2% and 5% of employment in Latin America and the Caribbean are at risk of being completely automated thanks to AI. Women and young workers in the formal sector are especially vulnerable to having their jobs automated. Disparities in internet infrastructure and other disparities may limit the region's ability to fully benefit from generative AI.
The study found that women and younger workers in formal job sectors are most vulnerable to having their tasks taken over by generative AI. This prospective shift could put additional strain on workers in a region already dealing with high inequality, owing to the presence of low-wage occupations in the informal economy.
The paper also observed that differences in internet infrastructure and other types of inequality may limit the region's ability to fully benefit from generative AI technology. According to the study's findings, generative AI might affect between 26% and 38% of occupations in Latin America and the Caribbean.
In contrast, the study found that AI might boost occupations by increasing productivity by 8% to 14%, particularly in metropolitan areas, the education sector, formal employment settings, and among those with higher incomes.
