Agoda Puts Trip Planning and Booking Into a Single Chat

Agoda has opened its AI Assistant to travellers in 21 markets, Singapore among them, letting people plan and book a trip inside one conversation in the app. The company describes it as the first brand new booking experience in its 20 plus year history, a rare structural change for a business built on search boxes and filter panels.

The assistant is wired into Agoda's live inventory of more than six million accommodations, plus flights, tours and attractions, so a traveller can check prices and availability and book without restarting the search. That connection to live supply is the part that separates it from a general purpose chatbot, which can suggest a hotel but cannot confirm a rate or a room.

But the harder problem is trust. Booking is a transaction where a wrong answer costs real money, and the assistant has to hold a conversation, a budget and a set of dates without drifting.

Agoda's answer is a trip planner canvas, a single view that gathers confirmed bookings, places to visit and plans still taking shape. The assistant keeps preferences and trip context as the plan develops, so a change of dates or a tighter budget carries through the conversation rather than resetting it.

The system also reaches outside Agoda's own inventory. Integrated web search pulls current information, with Gemini and Google Maps Grounding surfacing ratings, photographs, opening hours and locations for restaurants and points of interest, which is the kind of detail a booking engine has never held.

And the underlying models are borrowed rather than built. Agoda says core conversational intelligence currently runs on OpenAI models, with Google's grounding layer for place data, which means the product is assembled from several suppliers and its behaviour will shift as those models change.

Early beta signals are encouraging but thin. Agoda says travellers using the assistant are more likely to book a connected trip, meaning a combination of hotels, flights, attraction tickets and tours, but it has not published conversion figures, booking values or how many people used the beta.

The company is making two executives available to discuss it. Matteo Frigerio, chief product officer, is positioned to talk about how AI has changed travel planning and what still has to happen before travellers can book the decisions they reach, and Idan Zalzberg, chief technology officer, on building AI that works reliably with live prices and availability.

But Agoda is not alone in this race. Booking platforms across the region have spent the past two years adding assistants that summarise reviews or suggest itineraries, and most of them stop at discovery, handing the traveller back to a search results page when it is time to transact. Rolling the booking itself into the conversation is a harder engineering problem because every price and every room count has to be correct at the moment it is quoted.

The competitive logic is straightforward. Travel has become a set of separate transactions, a flight here, a hotel there, an attraction ticket somewhere else, and whoever collapses that into one flow captures the booking and the data around it. Agoda sits inside Booking Holdings, the group that also owns Booking.com and Kayak, so anything proven in one market can be pushed across a much larger inventory base, and Singapore is a sensible first market because travellers here plan short regional breaks and long haul trips inside the same app.

And what is not yet clear is the cost side. Agoda has not said what the assistant does to margins when a model provider sits between the customer and the booking, or whether the feature will be priced into rates.
