Workers at Samsung India Plant Stage Strike, Impacting Production
Workers at the Samsung Electronics plant in southern India go on indefinite strike to demand higher wages. Production at the Sriperumbudur facility was impacted, with approximately half of daily output affected. Union leader confirms that the strike will continue until the demands are met.
This strike follows a four-day strike by Samsung Electronics' largest union in South Korea in August, when they demanded higher wages and bonuses after unsuccessful negotiations with management.
According to a source familiar with the matter, the Samsung plant in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, which employs just under 2,000 people and manufactures refrigerators and washing machines, experienced a significant impact on its daily output, with approximately half of the production being affected as a result of numerous workers absenteeism.
E. Muthukumar, the head of the Samsung India union, mentioned that many employees in company attire congregated outside the plant, advocating for salary increments and improved working conditions. He affirmed that the strike would persist, refraining from specifying a duration for the protest.
A spokesperson from Samsung India stated via email that the company actively works with its employees to address any concerns they may have and ensures compliance with all statutory regulations. The spokesperson also stated that Samsung is committed to avoiding any disruptions for its customers during this time.
India is an important market for Samsung because it is growing rapidly. The Sriperumbudur plant, which opened in 2007, is one of Samsung's two manufacturing facilities in India; the other is in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, where smartphones are produced. According to an industry insider, Samsung has enlisted contract workers to mitigate potential major production disruptions before the upcoming festive season, when electronic sales in India surge.
