WhatsApp Testing AI-Powered Tool That Lets You Create Stickers Using Text Prompts
Updated: Dec 18, 2023
Can't find a sticker that best expresses what you want to say or communicate? An artificial intelligence (AI) might be able to help.
According WABetaInfo, a news site devoted to news and updates about WhatsApp, the Meta-owned messaging service could soon allow you to create custom stickers using generative AI. The tool is only available to a small number of testers via the Google Play Beta Program as of writing, but the plan is to reportedly have a wider roll out in the coming weeks.
"Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity," Meta told Engadget. "We have nothing further to share at this time."
Going by the tests, the new tool lets you create custom stickers via the appropriately named Create button that gets added to the keyboard in your sticker tab. You can then enter a description of the sticker you'd like to use and the AI would generate a number of options for you to choose from.
The AI-generated stickers, as WABetaInfo notes, are easily recognisable. That means recipients can easily tell when a sticker was generated by Meta's AI technology. They're also generated using a secure technology, giving you some form of control over the tool. If you think a sticker is inappropriate or harmful, you can report it to Meta.
The main advantage of having access to such a tool is that it could make your chats more personalised. You won't see the same set of pre-made stickers or GIFs anymore and instead see stickers that are relevant to your interests and chats.
WhatsApp in late-July rolled out instant video messages, a feature that lets you record and share clips of up to 60 seconds long. The videos, similar to text-based messages, are protected by end-to-end encryption.
