WhatsApp Rolls Out Feature That Lets You Send Messages, Reminders to Yourself

When you want to keep reminders or shopping lists handy, it's probably easier to have them accessible in an app that you use every day like, say, a messaging app. WhatsApp lets you do just that by adding the option to message yourself.

Aptly called Message Yourself, the new feature puts you at the top of your contacts list when writing new messages, so that you can quickly send yourself notes or reminders which you want to have next to your other conversations.

If the setting is enabled, you'll receive notifications for your own messages – the same as when others message you – to make sure nothing goes unread. You can even pin your chat with yourself to the top of a conversation list to save you from having to search for it.

Previously, to message yourself on the app, you either had to create a group with just you as the member or use the click-to-chat feature. With the new addition, however, you no longer have to rely on these workarounds to message yourself.

The feature was reportedly first tested among beta users in late October, as spotted by WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfo, before it started rolling out globally. Meta, which owns WhatsApp, on Monday announced the feature is part of a new update that's coming to all iOS and Android devices in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp isn’t the first messaging service to incorporate the idea of messaging yourself. Signal has a similar feature called Note to Self which serves the same purpose – to let you create messages for yourself. Telegram, meanwhile, has Saved Messages, which lets you bookmark, save or set any messages you think are important for easy access in the future. Saving a message lets you access them from the top of the chat screen.
