Vogue Singapore's Covers for March Issue Feature AI-Generated Images

Why spend time creating an image when you can simply type a prompt and have an artificial intelligence (AI) tool create it for you?

Vogue Singapore unveiled three covers for its March issue, each featuring an image of a woman that's generated by an AI. The covers, which are inspired by the theme of "Roots", were created in collaboration with Mumbai-based AI artist Varun Gupta, who's known for his AI series "Cyborgbay" and "Yeh Jawani hai Deewani". They're said to showcase the unique ethnicity and heritage of different Southeast Asian women while exhibiting the publication's continued commitment to embracing innovation.

The covers also mark the first issue under the leadership of the publication's new Editor-in-Chief, Desmond Lim.

"The developments in AI have opened up a broader conversation as to what it means for creatives," he said. "I am thrilled to have worked with artist Varun Gupta where we drew inspiration from images of Southeast Asian women from the early 1900’s to reimagine fashion, design and innovation for Vogue Singapore’s March covers."

The AI-generated women are named Aadhya, Faye and Melur, and they all reflect Southeast Asian diasporic heritage. Aadhya, in particular, is digitally dressed in Ferragamo’s spring/summer 2023 collection. "I strongly believe AI has enabled us to realise the true potential of our imagination," said artist Varun Gupta. "In addition, we get to integrate artworks with real work products."

The unveiling of the covers comes amid ongoing debate about whether AI-generated images should be protected under copyright laws. Last week, the U.S. Copyright Office ruled to cancel the copyright registration of the AI-generated images from the comic book Zarya of the Dawn, which were created using the generative AI tool Midjourney. The office, however, said that author Kristina Kashtanova's text and the arrangement of the book's visual and written elements can still be protected by the law.

Vogue Singapore’s March issue goes on sale on 15 March via Shopify and leading retailers.
