Updated: Dec 22, 2023

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's largest contract chip maker, has announced that it will promote from within the company after Chairman Mark Liu retires next year.

The board's nominating, corporate governance and sustainability committee has recommended that current CEO and vice-chairman C.C. Wei succeed Liu in order to ensure continuity for the major Apple supplier.

Wei, who holds a doctorate in electrical engineering from Yale University, has been a member of TSMC's board since 2017. With his extensive experience and expertise in the industry, Wei is well-positioned to take on the role of chairman and lead the company into the future.

Liu, a veteran of TSMC who joined the company in 1993, became chairman in 2018 following the retirement of founder Morris Chang. In a statement, Liu expressed his desire to utilise his decades of semiconductor experience in other endeavors, spend more time with his family and embark on the next chapter of his life.

TSMC's decision to promote from within reflects the company's commitment to maintaining stability and continuity in its leadership. With Wei's deep understanding of TSMC's operations and strategic vision, the company can ensure a smooth transition and continue to deliver high-quality chips to its clients, including tech giant Apple.

As the global demand for semiconductors continues to rise, TSMC plays a crucial role in meeting this demand and driving innovation in the industry. The company's advanced manufacturing processes and cutting-edge technologies have made it a key player in the semiconductor market.

TSMC's ability to secure long-term partnerships with major tech companies, such as Apple, has contributed to its success and solidified its position as a leader in the industry. With Wei at the helm, TSMC can build upon its strong foundation and further strengthen its market position.

The retirement of Chairman Mark Liu marks the end of an era for TSMC, but the company is well-prepared for the future under the leadership of C.C. Wei. As TSMC continues to push the boundaries of chip manufacturing and drive technological advancements, it remains a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
