TikTok Hack Targets 'High-Profile' Users, Including CNN and Paris Hilton, via DMs
TikTok is undergoing a cyberattack via DMs aimed at high-profile users. The company is aggressively working to stop the attack and restore access to the affected accounts. CNN and Paris Hilton's TikTok accounts were among the targets.
The goal of this attack is to acquire unauthorised access to users' accounts, however TikTok assures users that they are taking quick measures to address the matter.
Jason Grosse, a representative for TikTok's privacy and security team, said, "We have taken measures to stop this attack and prevent it from happening in the future. We're working directly with affected account owners to restore access, if needed." While TikTok is currently researching the attack, Grosse defined it as a "potential exploit" but did not elaborate on its scope or sophistication.
TikTok's response comes after a recent investigation revealed that CNN's account was temporarily compromised. According to an unidentified insider at the news organisation, the breach did not originate on CNN's end.
The timing of these hacking attempts is especially alarming, as the United States prepares for the forthcoming presidential election. With the possibility of greater cyberattacks on journalistic companies, heightened security measures are essential.
Paris Hilton's TikTok account was also affected, according to Forbes. Sources within the company confirmed the event, however TikTok assured Hilton that his account was targeted but not breached.
It is important to note that TikTok's security and privacy concerns go beyond intrusions by bad actors. The company is currently involved in a legal battle to remain available in the United States. In April, President Joe Biden approved legislation requiring TikTok's parent firm, China-based ByteDance, to sell the site or risk a ban. TikTok, along with many users, has filed lawsuits against the US government, claiming that the law is unlawful on First Amendment grounds.
