The Impressive Sound of the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 4
Updated: May 23
One of the most impressive things about the Momentum True Wireless 4 is its sound quality. Equipped with 7mm dynamic drivers and Sennheiser's TrueResponse transducer system, the MTW4 delivers the balanced, detailed sound signature that the brand is renowned for.
In terms of design, the MTW4 retains a similar form factor to its predecessor, the Momentum True Wireless 3. Measuring 6.2g each, the earbuds are slightly heavier than some competitors. However, the weight is well-balanced and they feel secure yet comfortable for long listening sessions. The earbuds come with interchangeable silicone ear tips in four sizes and adjustable fins to ensure a comfortable, stable fit within the ear canal. New colour options for the MTW4 include black graphite, copper graphite, and white silver.
The MTW4 is now rated IP54 for water and splash resistance, a step up from the IPX4 rating of the previous model. This added protection means the earbuds can withstand light rain or sweat and are less prone to damage from moisture. Touch controls on the outer housing allow for play/pause, track skip, volume adjustment and activating the earbuds' active noise cancellation or transparency modes.
The MTW4 features upgraded components like a new Snapdragon Qualcomm QCC3046 chipset that supports high-resolution audio codecs such as AptX Adaptive. Battery life sees a modest boost to 7.5 hours with ANC on (7 hours with ANC off) per full charge. The charging case provides three additional charges for a total playback time of 28 hours, allowing for all-day listening on a single charge.
In terms of sound quality, the MTW4 deliver the balanced, detailed signature that Sennheiser is renowned for. Vocals sound natural and intimate, sitting prominently in the mix. Bass has good definition and impact without overpowering the mids or highs. Instrument separation is excellent, allowing each element to shine through clearly. The soundstage is wide and immersive, pulling the listener into the recording. Sennheiser's app allows for EQ adjustments to tweak the sound profile to their personal taste via sliders for bass, treble, and other parameters. Presets are also included for genres like Classical, Podcast, and Bass Boost.
The MTW4's active noise cancellation blocks out ambient noise like traffic, airplane engines or chatter effectively when a tight seal is achieved. The transparency mode uses the same mics to allow natural hearing of the outside world for safety awareness. Call quality is clear, though background noise reduction could be improved. Other new features include improved Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity for fewer audio dropouts, multipoint pairing across two devices simultaneously, and upcoming support for LE Audio and Auracast broadcast audio streaming protocols.
