Tesla's Musk Anticipates AI Surpassing Human Intelligence in the Near Future

Elon Musk predicts AI will surpass human intelligence, possibly as early as next year. Musk highlights the importance of electricity availability in advancing AI capabilities. Training of AI models hindered by a shortage of advanced chips.

In a recent interview, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a bold prediction, stating that artificial intelligence (AI) will surpass the intelligence of the smartest human being, possibly as early as next year. Musk, known for his visionary ideas, believes that the development of AGI (artificial general intelligence) is just around the corner.

During the interview, Musk discussed the limitations of AI, highlighting the importance of electricity availability in advancing its capabilities. He also mentioned the upcoming release of the next version of Grok, the AI chatbot developed by his startup xAI, which is expected to be trained by May.

When asked about the timeline for AGI development, Musk confidently stated, "If you define AGI as smarter than the smartest human, I think it's probably next year, within two years." This projection aligns with his ambitious vision for the future of AI.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, expressed frustration with the lack of advanced chips hindering the training of Grok's version 2 model. He founded xAI as a competitor to OpenAI, which he has accused of deviating from its original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity. OpenAI has denied these allegations.

Training the Grok 2 model required approximately 20,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, and Musk revealed that future models, such as Grok 3, will require a staggering 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips. While the shortage of chips has been a significant constraint in AI development, Musk emphasised that electricity supply will play a crucial role in the coming years.

In addition to discussing AI, Musk also touched upon the topic of electric vehicles (EVs). He praised Chinese carmakers as the most competitive in the world, acknowledging the challenges they pose to Tesla. Musk has previously warned that Chinese rivals could outperform global competitors if trade barriers are not in place.

Addressing a recent union strike in Sweden against Tesla, Musk expressed relief, stating, "I think the storm has passed on that front." He also mentioned that Norway's sovereign wealth fund, one of Tesla's largest shareholders, had met with the company's chair to discuss the situation.

Elon Musk's predictions and insights into the future of AI and electric vehicles continue to captivate the tech and automotive industries. As the world eagerly awaits the advancements in AI technology, it remains to be seen whether Musk's projections will become a reality.
