Tesla plans to begin offering public rides in its self-driving robotaxis on June 22, Chief Executive Elon Musk announced Tuesday.

The service will initially launch in Austin, Texas, using 10 to 20 Model Y SUVs operating in a limited area under remote human supervision.

Musk said the date is tentative and could change due to safety concerns, stating, “We are being super paranoid about safety.” The company has been testing its autonomous vehicles on public streets in Austin.
The robotaxis will use Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, a new version of its advanced driver assistance system. Musk shared a video on X showing a Model Y navigating an Austin intersection without a human driver, followed by another Model Y, both marked with “Robotaxi.”
Starting June 28, Tesla vehicles will also begin driving themselves from the end of the factory line directly to customers’ homes, according to Musk.
The robotaxi launch is seen as critical for Tesla, which has shifted focus from developing a lower-cost electric vehicle to prioritising autonomous driving technology. The company’s valuation heavily depends on the success of its self-driving ambitions.
Tesla plans to expand the robotaxi service to other U.S. states later this year, including California, which has strict autonomous vehicle regulations.
Musk’s announcement comes amid declining EV sales and increased competition, as well as political controversies surrounding his public support for former U.S. President Donald Trump.
