Undisclosed Ox Alpha AI Model Shocks Industry with Top Performance

A previously undisclosed artificial intelligence model, known as stealth/ox-alpha, was recently listed on OpenRouter, a prominent model aggregator. This model has demonstrated superior real world coding capabilities, surpassing several established closed frontier models. Its unexpected performance has initiated considerable speculation within the industry, also bringing attention to certain development strategies employed in China.

OpenRouter's recent addition, stealth/ox-alpha, appeared without any accompanying company name, parameter count, or technical documentation. Its listed price was zero. Due to the English meaning of "ox," users on the Chinese internet quickly referred to the model as "Niu Lai," which translates to "bull is coming." This anonymity and immediate high performance sparked considerable discussion among developers and tech observers globally.

And this unannounced model performed notably well. An independent researcher subjected the model to ten authentic software engineering tasks derived from the DeepSWE benchmark. Ox Alpha successfully completed eight of these tasks, achieving an 80 percent pass rate. This outcome placed it above Claude Fable 5, which recorded a 65 percent pass rate, and GPT 5.6 Sol, which managed 52 percent. The chief executive of Stripe personally assessed the model and described its capabilities as "quite impressive." Ox Alpha then ascended to the top position on the OpenRouter leaderboard and established a new record for daily usage.

The model's specifications are equally robust. It features a context window of 1,048,600 tokens and is capable of generating up to 131,000 tokens of output per call. Inputs include text, image, and video. The system also supports tool calling, function calling, and structured JSON output. In a more extensive 113 task DeepSWE evaluation, Ox Alpha achieved a score of 63, positioning it comparably to Claude Opus 4.8. These technical details further contributed to the widespread interest in the anonymous entity.

A period of cross border conjecture followed. Devs engaged in "technical fingerprinting" to discern the model's origin. A tokenizer test revealed a consistent 75 token difference when compared to Zhipu AI's GLM 5.3. Furthermore, a video encoder test showed a token by token match with GLM 5V Turbo. An application programming interface error format mirrored Zhipu's existing services, according to Pandaily. These observations led many to conclude with 99 percent confidence that Ox Alpha is a Zhipu GLM 5.x model scheduled for future release. Google DeepMind researchers also offered guarded hints concerning Gemini, though no company has formally acknowledged the model.

And Ox Alpha does not represent the first instance of such an anonymous launch. Earlier stealth models introduced on OpenRouter have all subsequently been identified as originating from Chinese organisations. Pony Alpha was later confirmed as Zhipu's GLM 5, while Hunter Alpha was Xiaomi's MiMo V2 Pro. Elephant Alpha was identified as Ant's Inclusion AI, and Owl Alpha was determined to be Meituan's Long Cat 2.0. This pattern suggests a deliberate strategy rather than isolated incidents.

The practice of anonymous posting serves to remove brand bias, allowing devs to assess a model based solely on its output. This method of quietly distributing free, high performing models has become an established approach for Chinese model developers. It appears to be a calculated move in the competitive compute business, providing an unadulterated evaluation of new capabilities without preconceived notions influencing perception.
