Spotify is expanding its monetisation program for creators and introducing new tools for video podcasters. The move aims to enhance competition with platforms such as YouTube and Netflix in the growing market.

The Swedish streaming organisation stated on Wednesday it has invested more than USD 10 billion in the podcast industry over the past five years. These investments have contributed to driving creator earnings, scaling engagement, and building infrastructure.

Spotify is lowering the thresholds to join its monetisation program, which launched a year ago. This makes it easier for a wider range of creators to participate and earn revenue.
Roman Wasenmuller, global head of podcast at Spotify, stated in a media briefing, "Since launching the program, monthly video podcast consumption on Spotify has nearly doubled." He added that the average Spotify podcast user streams twice as many video shows per month as they did before the launch.
Creators can now qualify for the program with 1,000 engaged audience members, 2,000 hours of content consumed over the past 30 days, and three published episodes. This update streamlines the entry requirements for aspiring podcasters.
The prior requirements for the program were 2,000 listeners, 10,000 hours of content consumed, and 12 published episodes. The new criteria signify a substantial reduction in the barrier to entry.
Creators in the program can earn from advertisements on free tiers and other platforms. Video creators receive an additional revenue stream, as Spotify directly pays them when premium subscribers watch their videos ad-free.

New sponsorship management tools will roll out in April, further aiding creators. These tools will enable creators to publish and monetise video podcasts directly from third-party hosting platforms, including Acast, Audioboom, and Libsyn.
Spotify also unveiled Spotify Sycamore Studios in Los Angeles. This new facility will serve as the home for The Ringer podcasts and will be available to select creators.
Jordan Newman, Spotify's head of content partnerships, told Reuters that the Los Angeles facility, alongside existing locations in London and New York, will help creators avoid facility rental costs.
