Meta has delayed the release of its artificial intelligence model code-named "Avocado" to at least May, the New York Times reported. The model was originally slated for a first-quarter launch, as previously reported by media outlets in December.

The delay comes as the new model has fallen short in performance. It did not meet expectations when compared to the latest offerings from rival organisations, the report stated.
This delayed timeline occurs even as Meta invests heavily to expand its AI ambitions. The company has a roadmap for building its own chips.
Meta previously laid out capital spending plans of between USD 115 billion and USD 135 billion for the year. This investment is in pursuit of "superintelligence", described as the horizon where AI will outsmart humans.
A Meta spokesperson told Reuters, "Our next model will be good, but more importantly, show the rapid trajectory we’re on, and then we’ll steadily push the frontier over the course of the year as we continue to release new models."
The spokesperson added in an emailed statement, "We’re excited for people to see what we’ve been cooking very soon."
Leaders of Meta’s AI division have discussed the possibility of temporarily licensing Google’s Gemini. This would power the company’s AI products, though no decisions have been reached.
Earlier, media outlets had reported that Meta was working on a text AI model code-named "Avocado". These reports indicated a first-quarter launch was planned.
Meta has delayed the launch of its "Avocado" AI model until at least May.
The delay is attributed to the model's performance falling short compared to rival offerings.
Meta is investing heavily in AI development, including building its own chips and planning USD 115 billion to USD 135 billion in capital spending.
