Sony, Honda's Self-Driving EV Could Feature A PS5

Ever been so hooked on a game you're playing that you wish you could take your home console on the road with you? Sony and Honda could soon make that a reality, teasing that their self-driving electric vehicle (EV) could feature a built-in PS5 console.

Izumi Kawanishi, Sony Honda Mobility President, told the Financial Times that it's "technologically possible" to integrate a PS5 into a vehicle.

The only thing that's seemingly preventing the partnership from doing it is that the vehicle must also have powerful autonomous driving systems. For you to be able to enjoy playing, your vehicle has to, of course, be able to drive itself safely. “To enjoy the space in your car, you have to make it a space where you don’t need to drive," said Yasuhide Mizuno, Chairman of Sony Honda Mobility.

Developing a fully autonomous driving system, however, could prove to be a tall task. The partnership itself conceded that the technology is not there yet, and it "will have to evolve considerably" to fulfil the project's vision.

Even Elon Musk's Tesla has yet to put out a vehicle that can be considered one hundred per cent autonomous. In the majority of cases for the automaker’s self-driving EVs, you still have to be ready to take control in case the system makes an error, which means you won't be able to play games while in your car. Tesla vehicles even support game streaming services like NVIDIA GeForce Now, although it would certainly be dangerous to use it while driving at this current point.

Sony and Honda want to compete with Tesla by releasing an EV that leans heavily towards delivering a mobile entertainment package. When the partnership was announced earlier this year, Sony said it'll handle the entertainment features, while Honda takes care of the car itself.

"Sony has content, services and entertainment technologies that move people," said Kawanishi. "We are adapting these assets to mobility, and this is our strength against Tesla."

The partnership's first EV models are expected to launch sometime in 2025.
