Researchers Develop Device to Help with the Drainage System's Toxic Gases
The team of researchers from Guangdong province and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has developed a technology to predict and manage toxic gases in urban drainage systems. The amount of hydrogen sulfide generated in drainage pipes has increased due to rapid urbanisation in China. The technology includes a mathematical model to predict gas generation and an online early warning system for risk control.

China's rapid urbanisation and expansion of drainage systems have led to a significant increase in the amount of hydrogen sulfide generated in the pipes. This has not only caused severe corrosion but has also resulted in numerous poisoning incidents and posed a threat to inspection and maintenance personnel, according to Jiang Feng, the leader of the research team and a professor at the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University.
To address this pressing issue, Sun Yat-sen University collaborated with the Drainage Services Department of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the South China Normal University to develop an intelligent technology.
The research team has successfully established a mathematical model that accurately predicts the generation and emission of hydrogen sulfide. In addition, they have constructed an online early warning system to enhance risk control and management.
The impact of this technology has been significant. It is currently being widely utilised in Guangdong and Hong Kong, resulting in a notable reduction in poisoning incidents and an extension of the lifespan of drainage pipes. Furthermore, it has successfully improved the sewerage system of the Harbor Area Treatment Scheme, which is the deepest of its kind in the world, as highlighted by Jiang.
The remarkable technological achievement of the research team has been recognised with several major awards, including the prestigious 2023 China Award for Science and Technology in Construction.
