5 Things That Elevate The Sony WF-1000XM4 From Great To Excellent

Updated: Sep 17, 2021

Sony made huge waves when they came out with the WF-1000XM3, and they’ve improved and refined their active noise cancelling know-how over the past two years, resulting in the new Sony WF-1000XM4. These earbuds aren’t just great though; they’re excellent, and here are five reasons why.

1. Connectivity

First off, you get great connectivity. The WF-1000XM4 runs on Bluetooth 5.2, which means you get better sound quality, lower latency and decreased power consumption, or better battery life in other words. Speaking of better sound quality, LDAC support finally comes to Sony’s true wireless earbuds, which means higher resolution audio streaming for people who own a device that supports LDAC.

2. ANC

Next, we have arguably the strongest selling point of these earbuds, the ANC. Sony’s WF-1000XM3 had some of the best ANC in true wireless earbuds, but these take it to a whole new level. Construction noise, train rumble and more are all effectively cancelled or dampened, and that’s also due in part to the new foam tips that Sony offers in the box. Made with polyurethane, these foam tips offer excellent passive noise isolation in tandem with Sony’s incredible ANC tech.

3. Battery Life

But all that doesn’t mean much if the earbuds aren’t able to power through a whole day with you. Thankfully, the Sony WF-1000XM4 has up to 8 hours of battery life with ANC turned on, and you’ll be able to get a whopping 12 hours with ANC off. There are an additional two charges in the case for a total of 24 hours, which is very impressive when you consider the strength of the ANC.

4. Companion App

If you think the ANC is too strong though, you’ll be able to customise that and a lot more with Sony’s comprehensive companion app. With the ability to see individual battery levels for the earbuds and case, customise touch controls, turn on DSEE Extreme upscaling and speak-to-chat, as well as an EQ feature with plenty of presets, the app is definitely a worthwhile download to get the most out of these earbuds.

5. Sound Quality

Most importantly, the sound quality out of these is very, very enjoyable. You get clear, impactful bass with no muddiness or distortion, accurate mids with a beautiful sense of airiness and very natural vocals. There’s also the option to tinker around with the EQ to get a sound that’s tuned to your liking if you prefer a bit more forwardness in the treble and such.

With great ANC, sound quality and plenty of customisation, these earbuds are definitely one of the best earbuds in 2021. For more information or to purchase the Sony WF-1000XM4, check out Sony's website here.
