Pope Leo XIV has called for the protection of human dignity in the digital age, warning against the misuse of artificial intelligence during the Vatican's first Mass for Catholic social media influencers.

Speaking at St Peter's Basilica during the Jubilee of Youth, a week-long event held every 25 years for young worshippers, the Pope said that technology must serve the "benefit of all humanity."
"Nothing that comes from man and his creativity should be used to undermine the dignity of others," he said.
The Pope emphasised the importance of preserving "our ability to listen and speak" in what he described as a "new era" shaped by AI.
He urged influencers to use their platforms to reach out to "those who suffer and need to know the Lord," encouraging them to become "agents of communion" who counteract division, polarisation, individualism and egocentrism.
The remarks are the latest in a series of statements Pope Leo XIV has made on AI since his election in May.
In his first Sunday address that month, he said the Church plays a vital role in defending human dignity and justice amid rapid technological advances.

Pope Leo XIV, born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian descent, studied mathematics at Villanova University in Philadelphia in 1977.
He was ordained in 1982 and later moved to Peru, where he worked with marginalised communities. He holds Peruvian nationality and is remembered for building bridges across cultures.
He is the first pontiff from the United States.
