OpenAI is intensifying its collaboration with Samsung Electronics, expanding their joint efforts across semiconductor development and enterprise artificial intelligence services. This move comes as the ChatGPT creator pursues the development of its own proprietary chips. Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, discussed the progression of this partnership, noting significant strides in the joint production and research of next-generation chips.

According to Reuters, Mr Kim, speaking recently in Seoul, specified that Samsung Electronics represents one of the most substantial global deployments of ChatGPT. He elaborated that Samsung employees, both within Korea and internationally, utilise ChatGPT for various professional functions. These functions encompass areas such as research and development, marketing, and sales. Samsung Electronics responded to enquiries with a statement indicating an inability to confirm information pertaining to customers.

And OpenAI previously introduced its initial custom artificial intelligence chip. This chip was engineered in conjunction with Broadcom. The internal project name for this chip was Jalapeno. Engineers, or 'devs' as they are known in the industry, from OpenAI and Broadcom collaborated on its design. The chip's primary purpose is for AI inference, a process involving data analysis to generate responses in applications like ChatGPT. Taiwan's TSMC was designated as the manufacturer for these chips.

Separately, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix earlier signed letters of intent to provide memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data centre initiative. Mr Kim commented on the ongoing requirement for memory chips, anticipating continued growth in demand. He suggested that increasingly advanced chips are necessary to facilitate faster and more intricate computing operations. Consequently, cooperation with South Korean semiconductor suppliers remains a priority for OpenAI's regional office.

Samsung itself is broadening its application of generative AI technologies. It recently stated that staff within its Device eXperience division would be permitted to utilise various AI models internally. This division is responsible for overseeing mobile telephones, televisions, and home appliances. The approved models for internal use include ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude.

But OpenAI has observed a notable increase in ChatGPT Enterprise users within South Korean companies and institutions. The number of such users grew approximately 28-fold over a twelve-month period leading up to late Aug. This expansion indicates a shift in business practices, moving beyond individual tasks to company-wide operational integration of artificial intelligence. Businesses are employing AI across multiple departmental functions.

These departmental functions cited by OpenAI include legal services, sales strategies, financial operations, marketing campaigns, and general company operations. The organisation refrained from disclosing specific overall user figures. According to OpenAI, South Korea maintained the highest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers globally, excluding the United States, as reported at the close of the preceding year.

So, the organisation anticipates an acceleration in adoption following the recent introduction of GPT-6 Astra. This new model is the latest iteration from OpenAI. It reportedly provides enhanced capabilities across several domains. These areas include computer use, professional assignments, scientific applications, coding tasks, and cybersecurity protocols.
