OpenAI Develops System to Track Progress Toward Human-Level Artificial Intelligence
OpenAI has unveiled a new classification system to track progress towards human-level AI. The system is divided into five tiers, starting with conversational AI and progressing to AI capable of doing tasks similar to an organisation. OpenAI thinks it is currently at Level 1 and on the verge of achieving Level 2, known as "Reasoners".
The system consists of five levels that range from the current conversational AI capabilities (Level 1) to AI that can perform complex tasks equivalent to an entire organisation (Level 5).
During an all-hands meeting, OpenAI shared this new classification system with its employees, and plans to extend it to investors and external stakeholders. The company thinks it is currently operating at Level 1, with AI systems capable of communicating in conversational English. However, OpenAI officials expressed optimism that they are close to reaching Level 2, sometimes known as "Reasoners." These systems can do fundamental problem-solving activities at the same level as a highly educated individual without the use of external tools.
At the same gathering, OpenAI's leadership presented a research project employing their GPT-4 AI model. According to an unnamed individual involved with the discussion, the demonstration focused on new skills that display human-like cognition. Internally, OpenAI tests new capabilities on a regular basis, as is industry standard.
OpenAI has worked to achieve artificial general intelligence (AGI), which refers to computers that can surpass humans in most tasks. While AGI does not yet exist, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, has previously said that it might be attained within a decade.
According to OpenAI's newly developed levels, the third tier on the path to AGI is called "Agents," representing AI systems capable of autonomously taking actions on behalf of users for several days. Level 4 describes AI that can generate new innovations, while the most advanced level is referred to as "Organisations."
The classification system was created by OpenAI executives and senior leaders, but it is still a work in progress. OpenAI plans to gather feedback from employees, investors, and its board, and may make adjustments to the levels over time.
