Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang raised concerns about Huawei Technologies Co.’s growing artificial intelligence capabilities during a closed-door meeting with the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The discussion, held Thursday, focused on Huawei’s AI chips and the potential impact of U.S. export restrictions on Nvidia’s competitiveness in China.
A senior congressional committee staff member said Nvidia warned that if AI models like DeepSeek R1 were trained on Huawei chips, it could drive global demand for those chips.
Nvidia spokesperson John Rizzo confirmed Huang’s meeting with the committee, stating that he emphasised the strategic importance of AI as national infrastructure and the need for investment in U.S. manufacturing.
Rizzo added that Huang reaffirmed Nvidia’s full support for U.S. efforts to promote American technology and interests globally.
Nvidia’s chips are essential for developing AI systems such as chatbots and image generators. They have been subject to U.S. export controls since the administration of former President Donald Trump.
In response, Nvidia created chips tailored for the Chinese market that complied with evolving regulations.
However, the company said last month that it had been asked by the Trump administration to halt sales of its latest China-specific chip, the H20.
Chinese customers had increased orders for the H20 due to its compatibility with low-cost AI models like those from DeepSeek.
Huawei has reportedly moved to fill the void left by Nvidia in China, preparing for mass production of a chip designed to rival Nvidia’s offerings.
