Neuralink, Elon Musk's brain implant company, announced Tuesday that 12 individuals worldwide have received its chips. This marks an increase from a prior announcement in June by its partner Barrow Neurological Institute, which stated that seven individuals had received implants.

Those seven individuals, who had severe paralysis, used the Neuralink implants to control digital and physical tools through thought. Collectively, all patients have had their devices for 2,000 days and accumulated more than 15,000 hours of use, Neuralink said on messaging platform X.
In July, the company announced its plans to launch a clinical study in Great Britain to test its chips. This research will be conducted in partnership with University College London Hospitals and Newcastle Hospitals.

Neuralink secured $650 million in a funding round in June.
Human trials for its brain implant began in 2024. This followed addressing safety concerns raised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which had initially rejected the application in 2022.
