Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish, and Nicki Minaj to Protect Artists' Rights in Letter to AI Developers
Prominent artists such as Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish, and Nicki Minaj have joined forces with over 200 musicians to submit an open letter to AI developers, urging them to respect artists' rights. The letter highlights concerns about the unauthorised use of AI technology, which can devalue artists' work and violate their rights. This initiative aligns with recent legislation passed in Tennessee to protect music industry professionals from the potential dangers of AI.
In a united effort to safeguard the rights of artists, a group of prominent musicians including Miranda Lambert, Billie Eilish, and Nicki Minaj have submitted an open letter to artificial intelligence (AI) developers. The letter, organised by the Artist Rights Alliance non-profit organization, calls on AI tech companies, developers, platforms, and digital music services to respect and honour the rights of human artists.
The letter, which features over 200 names including Stevie Wonder, Peter Frampton, Katy Perry, Smokey Robinson, and J Balvin, highlights the concerns surrounding the use of AI technology in the music industry. While acknowledging the potential creative possibilities of AI, the letter emphasises the threats it poses to human artistry.
One of the key concerns raised in the letter is the unauthorised use of preexisting work to train AI models, which can lead to the replacement of artists and a significant decrease in royalty payments. The artists argue that this practice not only devalues their work but also violates their rights as creators.
"We must protect against the predatory use of AI to steal professional artists' voices and likenesses, violate creators' rights, and destroy the music ecosystem," the letter states, calling for a halt to the infringement on artists' creativity.
The Artist Rights Alliance, an artist-led non-profit organization, has been at the forefront of advocating for musicians in the ever-evolving digital economy. Their efforts aim to ensure that artists are fairly compensated and their rights are respected in the face of technological advancements.
This letter comes on the heels of Tennessee becoming the first state to pass legislation specifically designed to protect songwriters, performers, and other music industry professionals from the potential risks associated with AI. The bill, known as the Ensuring Likeness, Voice, and Image Security Act or "ELVIS Act," will go into effect on July 1.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, who signed the bill into law stated, “Artists have intellectual property. They have gifts. They have a uniqueness that is theirs and theirs alone, certainly not artificial intelligence.”
