Meta Launches New Controls on Facebook To Personalise What Reels You See

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

Meta has rolled out new controls for Reels on Facebook that let you personalise what videos you want to see more or less of.

Now, when you watch Reels, you can tap the three-dot menu on the bottom right part of the video player and find two new control options: Show more" and "Show less."

Selecting the first option temporarily increases the video's ranking score and for others like it. You're essentially telling Facebook to recommend similar videos. Selecting the second option, on the other hand, does the opposite and decreases the video's ranking. The more you interact with these options, the better Facebook becomes at knowing your viewing preferences and recommending videos you'll enjoy.

"We want reels to reflect your interests – to help you explore what you enjoy now, while also helping you discover interests, creators and communities you’ll love going forward," wrote Meta in a blog post.

Meta additionally rolled out contextual labels on the Reels video player to help you understand why you're seeing that particular video. It would, for example, say a video is being recommended to you because a friend liked it.

Apart from the new discovery controls, Meta also wants Reels to be more accessible on the Facebook app. The social media giant has added Reels to the main navigation menu at the top of Facebook Watch to make it quicker and easier to find, watch and share. You'll also now be able to scroll seamlessly between short-form and long-form videos when watching videos on Facebook.

The latest update to Reels comes as Meta shares that short-form videos continue to drive incremental time spent on both Facebook and Instagram. It looks to maintain this growth by adding more ways for users to personalise how they discover new videos, along with incorporating a new feedback system that can help train the company's algorithms to be more attuned to users' preferences.
